The book that I read for my Literature Circle is The Blind Side by Michael Lewis. The book is about this young black boy named Michael Oher in Memphis. He really has no home because his biological mother is a drug addict and couldn’t support him. Michael doesn’t have a stable home so he is just floating around the city in the same clothes and going through trash to get food. A very generous woman named Leah-Anne Tuey takes Michael in her home and adopts him as her son. Mike becomes a very successful football player as a left tackle, one of the most important positions in football.
Our literature circle conversations between Greg, Matt, Tyler, and I had interesting discussions but they were useful and productive. One of the discussions we had was about Lawrence Taylor and his hit on Joe Theisman. Greg as an offensive lineman for Bloomsburg, we asked him about blocking and how important it truly is to the game to protect your quarterback. It was interesting to talk to an offensive lineman at a colligate level and get some insight on the schemes and types of blocking. It really gave me a better view on the position of left tackle.
Another topic that we discussed was how Michael excelled in the sport of track and field especially the discus throw. As a track athlete myself I know a lot about the sport and what good marks are. The guys asked me questions in general of the sport and what the elite people are doing in the sport. It was fun to talk about the sport I love during a successful discussion. I never knew Michael threw the discus until I read the book. Michael had a throw of over 160 feet which in high school is extremely impressive.
In this essay I made a lot of changes to my writing style than my first essay of the year which was the interview essay. In the first one I really didn’t give in depth details and give the reader things they can relate to. I also didn’t target a specific audience in my interview essay which definitely took away from the grade and also most people couldn’t relate so they wouldn’t have wanted to read about something they weren’t interested in. In this essay I targeted a direct audience which is football and track and field fans. Even though the book was mostly about the inspirational story of a homeless boy who turned out to be a football star, it did a really good job at targeting a wide audience.
